NOT JUST SLED DOGS

While Chilkat Kennel primarily consists of Alaskan huskies, we also own several Border Collies who are at various levels of herding training. Herding definitely has to take a back seat to sled dog training and racing, but it does allow us to continue to enjoy working dogs year round.

Chilkat Kennel has evolved and changed many times since 1987. It seems we are always in a state of flux - new dogs, new equipment, new challenges. The one lesson we have learned well over the years is that there is always something new to be learned about things we have been doing for a long time. Nothing is sacred. An unwillingness to learn from others (no matter their level of experience) dooms one to mediocrity. Our hope and desire is to keep on learning until we get it right.

HOUSING

Most of our Alaskan Huskies are housed in recycled fiberglass concrete base forms. The forms are mounted upside down on a raised platform with a small landing at the front. Stainless steel bowls are mounted to the top of each house for feeding. A galvinized water bucket is attached to the side of each house. The dogs are attached to a chain which is mounted on a swiveling post.

TRANSPORTATION

We transport the racing dogs to races and training sessions in the vehicle pictured to the right. Each compartment is 22” wide, 22” high and 42” deep, large enough for two dogs. This method of transport keeps the dogs safe and warm while traveling. Equipment is stored in a compartment at the rear, sleds are carried on top.

TRAINING TRAILS

We are fortunate to be able to train right out of the kennel. In cooperation with the farmer who leases the land we maintain a perimeter trail and several loop turn around trails. In order to expose the dogs to as many trail conditions as possible we have a wooden bridge over a creek, several short but steep hills, narrow wooded trails with overhanging trees, numerous gee/haw situations and wide open trail
